Easy Methods to Check and Adjust Tire Pressure at Home

Incorrect tire pressure can lead to poor fuel economy, uneven tire wear, and more. Therefore, it is important to maintain the correct air pressure to avoid these issues. Thankfully, checking and adjusting tire pressure is a simple task you can do at home. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your tires are always in top shape. Essential Tips to Check and Inflate Tires Correctly

  • Check the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle, which can be found on a sticker inside the driver’s door, in the owner’s manual, or sometimes on the fuel door. The pressure is usually listed in PSI (pounds per square inch).
  • For the most accurate reading, check tire pressure when the tires are cold, meaning the car hasn’t been driven for at least three hours. You’ll have to locate the valve stem on the tire, and unscrew the small cap.
  • Press the tire pressure gauge firmly onto the valve stem. You’ll hear a brief hiss of air, which is normal. Keep the gauge pressed until you get a reading. Digital gauges will display the pressure on a screen, while analog gauges will show it on a dial. Compare reading with the recommended tire pressure, add air if it is lower than recommended. If it’s higher, you’ll need to release some air.
  • If you need to add air, attach the air compressor hose to the valve stem. Once your tire is inflated to the proper pressure, replace the valve cap. This helps keep dirt and moisture out of the valve stem.
